But in the end I’ve seen nothing of what’s been given
Esta vida que de me ocupo, mesmo eu a amando, tem seus limites
This life that I’ve employed, while I love it, it has its limits
A falha que lamento, mesmo dolorosa, devo admitir
The failing I regret, though it’s painful, I must admit it
De tudo o que sei deste mundo, eu nunca vivi "
For everything I know of this world, I never lived it”

Um silêncio pairou por um momento de reflexão
A silence hung for a moment’s thought
Enquanto os ecos na sala decaíram e afinaram
As echoes from the room decayed and tapered off
E lá estávamos sentados refletindo, foi tudo em vão?
And there we sat reflecting, was it all for naught?
Até eu falar sério com este breve comentário
Until I spoke in earnest with this brief remark
Eu disse que " embora seja evidente o seu conhecimento é comparável com muita sagacidade
I said that “while it’s evident your knowledge is rivaled by much shrewdness
Eu nunca conheci um homem com tanta sabedoria que é tão tolo "
I’ve never met a man with such wisdom who’s so foolish”
Então ele sorriu e riu e perguntou se eu
Then he grinned and he chuckled and asked if I

Would speak on what I’d seen through my travels, so I replied

I’ve seen the peaks of mountains that reach out and touch the sky
A luta para sobreviver e o deserto onde sonhos morreram
The struggle to survive and the desert where dreams have died
Eu vi o melhor e o pior que nós tentamos esconder
I’ve seen the best and the worst that we try to hide
O sal da terra e do mal da humanidade
The salt of the earth and the evil of humankind
Eu vi o destruído e devastado e carniceiros revirando os detritos em meio aos escombros
I’ve seen the wrecked and ravaged and scavengers rummage through debris
E aqueles que procuraram na esperança, encontrar sentido onde nenhum costumava existir
And those that searched in hope, finding meaning where none once used to be
E alguns que tempestuaram as praias
And some that stormed the beaches
Alguns que juraram lealdade
Some that pledged allegiance
Alguns que queimaram a terra por motivos com os quais não concordavam
Some that scorched the earth for motives that they don’t agree with
Vi alguns se perderem dentre as corrente de seus lutos
Seen some get lost among the current of their grievance
Enquanto a maré de morte e nascimento deixou alguns sem palavras
While the tide of death and birth left some speechless
Eu vi o amor deixar alguns de joelhos
I’ve seen love bring some to their knees
E alguns ascendem corações quando sorriem sem motivo
And some lift hearts when they smile for no reason
Eu vi fins de contos de fadas nos quais acreditar
I’ve seen fairytale endings to believe in
E agora eu vejo um homem que teria visto o mesmo se ao menos tivesse aproveitado
And now I see a man who’d see the same if he’d but seize it
